Although Brazil’s energy matrix is predominantly renewable, the country remains one of the top emitters of greenhouse gases, primarily due to deforestation and land-use change. Gaps in climate governance and interinstitutional coordination exacerbate this scenario. In response, Brazil updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2024, targeting a 59 to 67 per cent emissions reduction by 2035, in line with the Paris Agreement.

Brazil has established a robust and inclusive climate governance framework that enables the development of principles, guidelines, and priorities for sectoral and subnational public policies, supporting the definition of the country's mitigation plan and the successful implementation of transformative policies aligned with its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction commitments.

The project supports Brazil's climate goals by advancing inclusive policies, improving institutional frameworks, and mobilising resources for transformative climate action. Measures include:

• Offering technical assistance to the Inter-Ministerial Climate Committee (CIM);

• Providing training for policymakers, civil society, and sub-national representatives on climate governance;

• Mobilising climate finance by improving access to climate funds and supporting climate start-ups through training, matchmaking, and acceleration programmes;

Additionally, the project serves as the International Climate Initiative (IKI) Interface in Brazil, engaging with IKI stakeholders while enhancing the visibility of initiatives in Brazil and Latin America.
